Recycling

Effective Thursday, January 2, 2025, recycling will be collected on Tuesdays.  Please see the schedule below for collection dates.

In 1991, the Borough began a comprehensive Curbside Recycling Program.  The goal of this program is to minimize the solid waste stream by recycling at least 25% of the refuse collected.  This saves landfill space which in turn lowers our disposal fees.

The green recycling containers delivered to each residence are the property of the Borough of Shillington and must remain at the property if you move.  Write your address in black magic marker or white paint on the green recycling container.  This simple process will make it easier to locate your can if lost.  Additional 20-gallon containers are available for residents to purchase at their cost.

TRASH AND RECYCLING UPDATE FOR 2025
As you may know, the residents of the Borough of Shillington receive trash and recycling collection services as part of a Borough contract that is placed out for bid.  The current contracts with A.J. Blosenski, Inc. and J.P. Mascaro, Inc. will expire December 31, 2024 resulting in the Borough putting out a new bid for service in August of this year.  After unforseen delays, the refuse and recycling contracts were recently awarded.  A.J. Blosenski, Inc. will continue to be the Borough’s trash hauler and Hollenbaugh’s Trash & Recycling, LLC will be the new recycling hauler.  The contract awarded to these two companies will begin on January 2, 2025.  The yearly cost for these services will be $313.00. Recent trash and recycling contracts awarded in nearby municipalities have shown an increase over current contracts of 30% to 40%.  The increase in rates is due to a number of factors impacting trash/recycling haulers including increases to the cost of labor, fuel, vehicles, insurance and disposal of waste/recycling.  The Borough has worked diligently to revise the bid specifications with the assistance of the Berks County Solid Waste Authority Director.  The Borough has updated the specifications in an attempt to offset some expected increases.  In an effort to control costs, Borough Council has awarded the refuse contract for once a week collection of refuse including one bulk item per collection week.  Making this change, has reduced the cost to each residential unit by $41.00 for the year.  Under the new contract, recycling collection will now be on Tuesday beginning with the south side of the Borough on January 7, 2025 and continue every other week.  The north side will begin on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 and will also continue every other week.
